The Read House Review: What To REALLY Expect If You Stay

the read house chattanooga

Turkeys do not gobble like they used to, as in not as much, on the limb or the roost. Back there near the beginning, I started down that "things ain't like they used to be" road. I could hear the groans from here, but most of us who have spent more years in the turkey woods than some of the current crop of turkey chasers have been alive know this is true.

Modern Renovation

And lastly we required assistance to and from our room because we were traveling with my elderly mother. The valet staff were so helpful and quick to help with luggage and retrieve the car. We will stay here again and recommend to friends and family. A hotel has stood on this downtown Chattanooga site since 1847.

First Read House Hotel

Many believe the room harbors the spirit of a woman named Annalisa Netherly. There are many legends as to who this woman was and how she became the famous spirit to haunt the hotel, but it is most well known that Ms. Netherly was a prostitute in Chattanooga during 1920s and 1930's. She supposedly resided in room 311 for an extended time. While details are hazy, Ms. Netherly in fact died in that very room. Some legends have it that she was found soaking in the tub with her head almost completely decapitated- more than likely done by a jealous lover or husband. Other legends say that as she took a gentleman suitor to her room and he later directed his time and attention elsewhere to another woman.

Bar & Billiards Room

By the 1960s, the hotel had changed hands again, and underwent another renovation under the Noe Hotel chain. In 1977, it claimed its rightful real estate on the National Register of Historic Places. In the latter decades of the 1900s, the hotel saw a revolving door of ownership, with numerous different companies taking the reins. A venerable roster of dignitaries and notables paraded through its hallowed corridors. Rutherford B. Hayes, Mexican President Miguel Aleman, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Andrew Jackson all spent nights in the suites. Luminous stars such as Bette Davis, Liberace, and Bob Hope kindled the night's fervor with their brilliance.

The Read House Offers the Following Room Amenities:

I have nothing negative to say, and I recommend this beautiful hotel in the heart of downtown Chattanooga to all types of travelers who want to be close to the action in downtown Chattanooga. Prime location, old-world elegance, comfortable rooms at a great price, and loaded with on-site amenities and extras? I stayed as a solo traveler but would have been comfortable at this hotel with my husband and children. Bridgeman’s is named for Peter “Rabbit” Bridgeman who worked at the hotel for 47 years. Onsite photos and displays pay homage to the restaurant’s namesake. Who had heard of The Read House knew of the legendary Peter “Rabbit” Bridgeman.

Could the Union Victory at VW Set Off a Wave?

This is not the first time I have said this maybe even this year, but I know the following phenomena in the turkey woods are true. You find yourself unable to hear a turkey, much less call one in. The gobblers seemingly overnight have all received the same memo and will not talk to you, no matter how you plead. We are deep into the second week of the spring turkey hunting season in my home state of West Virginia, and I am tired.

Private Dining & Events

The spectacular Silver Ballroom showcases 25-foot ceilings, silver-leaf moldings, and original 1926 sterling silver and Waterford crystal chandeliers. Corporate travelers and other guests can use the business center, which is open 24/7, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. Perhaps the thing the Read House is most known for is the haunting of room 311.

However, the visit took a rather public turn when Churchill made headlines by emphatically slamming the door of his suite on an inquisitive reporter. In 1875, with the city in the grips of a devastating cholera outbreak, the location was requisitioned once more, serving as a quarantine facility and a hospital. Just two years later, a yellow fever epidemic further compounded the town's woes. Months later in April, the war ignited, and Chattanooga found itself ensnared at the juncture of the opposing forces. In January 21, 1861, at the eve of the Civil War, Jefferson Davis stopped at the hotel on his way home to Mississippi after resigning from the United States Senate. Lock in a great price for The Read House, Downtown City Center - rated 9 by recent guests.

'94 - Lost History

I stayed in a Premier King Corner Room on the eighth floor. The room had three windows and a small table with two chairs if I wanted to eat or work in my room. It also had a small upholstered chair and a bench at the foot of the king bed.

Cancellation and prepayment policies vary according to accommodation type. Please enter the dates of your stay and check the conditions of your required room. Location was convenient to the electric buses which were a bonus. Felt the food service could have been better and it would have been nice to have breakfast included in our stay.Had lobster bisque one evening and was ill the next two days with gastro issues. Not sure if it was food poisoning but I had all the symptoms. We ESPECIALLY enjoyed the Haunted 311 Room tour given by John who is a talented actor. Also, the food and beverage prices were very reasonable.

Since its opening in 1872, The Read House has been revered, both as an icon of Jazz-Era opulence and a bastion of southern hospitality.

In a statement, Volkswagen thanked workers for voting and said 83.5% of the 4,300 production workers cast ballots in the election. Next up for a union vote are workers at Mercedes factories near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, who will vote on UAW representation in May. The union wound up getting 2,628 votes, or 73% of the ballots cast, compared with only 985 who voted no in an election run by the National Labor Relations Board. Check out the hotel description above to learn more about the amenities available during your stay. Located in the historic Tower Building, this room features a 50-inch flat-screen TV, Keurig machine®, in-room safe, glass walk-in shower, bathrobes and slippers, Roam toiletries and a refrigerator.

Guests are required to show a photo ID and credit card upon check-in. Please note that all Special Requests are subject to availability and additional charges may apply. Prices for cribs and extra beds aren't included in the total price. They'll have to be paid for separately during your stay. Another highlight is the Porter’s Steakhouse, offering fine-dining in an intimate setting. It also serves breakfast (for a fee) during the week and lunch daily.

Travelers seeking a more modern property could try The Chattanoogan, which has an indoor pool and a spa, at comparable rates. If you’re traveling to Chattanooga with kids, the Tennessee Aquarium is a don’t-miss. Also, check out Los Trompos, which is a  large-scale, interactive art installation inspired by the shape of large, spinning tops in a variety of shapes sitting along the Tennessee River.

It makes a terrific home base for a Chattanooga girls trip or romantic couples getaway. In 1926, the Read House re-opened after a major transformation, the older parts of the hotel were stripped away and ten stories were added, with a design scheme influenced by the Palmer House in Chicago. During this period, it became a popular destination for travelers and was known for its luxurious accommodations and fine dining in the city’s center. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), this property is taking steps to protect the safety of guests and staff. Certain services and amenities may be reduced or unavailable as a result.

The gym is small, but it has all of the standard equipment anyone needs to get a workout in, including two Peloton bikes. The indoor pool is well maintained with towel service and plenty of seating. The pool and gym are in the Manor (newer) section of the hotel. I did not use either, but I did visit both to get a look at the facilities.
